According to figures released by the HSE between 2011-2020, 111 teachers died from mesothelioma. In 2001-2010 the number was recorded as 75.
It is noted that there has been an increase in the deaths of female teachers born between 1935 to 1954 from mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure in the school buildings they were working in.
Often there is a perception that you must have worked directly with asbestos to be at risk of methothelioma. This is not correct, it can be by living or working in an environment where asbestos is present or alternatively living or working with someone who has regular contact with asbestos.
People can also develop mesothelioma from exposure due to cosmetics such as make-up and talcum powder where asbestos was included. There are several large claims being filed against manufacturers such as Johnson & Johnson in the US.
These statistics show that the sadly the risk of developing an illness as a result of exposure to asbestos is not confined to those that worked directly with it.
